The Ghost Lights
When I was in my teens, there was a particular spooky place called the Ghost lights. In the late 1970’s and early 80’s, it was the place to take your date to scare the living hell out of them.
The ghost lights was actually located in Hillsville, Pennsylvania about a 30-minute ride from Youngstown. The drive was eerie as we would pass several funeral parlors on Route 616 and once we passed the Campbell bridge, the road got narrower and the tree’s were close to the road and many of them were of the weeping willow variety.
An Old Cemetery was right before we got to the ghost lights. Of course there was a story about the graveyard. As the story goes, it was a haunted graveyard and even though it was abandoned and no electricity was connected, an eerie light always shined on the Oldest Tomb Marker. And if anyone were brave enough to investigate the grave, they would find the shock of their life for the name on the marker would be yours. Of course I had to verify this phenomenon and ventured to the tomb. Slightly disappointed, the Grave Marker did not have my name on it, nor did it have anyone’s name on it. The many years in the ground had taken its toll and weathered the inscription away. Now back to the ghost lights…..
The announcement that we were there was a four way cross roads with an old abandoned house on the right side across the road. It was said to be a haunted house, but after complete inspection, all we found were some old motorcycle chains and scattered beat up old furniture. However, during one visit, Guy, a fellow Grassy Knoll Institute scientist fell through the floor up to his waist. A little wider hole and he would have dropped into the basement.
So, what are the ghost lights? Well, it was many things. For starters, it was the home of the Eternal Flame, the Forbidden Bridge, and home of the green man. (Or hook man as some would say) All this paranormal activity concentrated in a quarter mile stretch of real estate.
As the legend goes that if you drive over the forbidden bridge and back three times in one day then you will die a horrible death. Of course we would drive over and back three times to test this legend but look, I’m still here, not dead, even horribly.
To the green man, or hook man. I believe everyone knows a story of this urban legend. Our story was that the man was actually green in color. His skin glowed caused by an accident long ago when he was working for the power company and was electrocuted. If the time was right and your luck was good, depending on ones perspective, you could see him shambling along the ghost lights road on his way home. I was there many times but never did I see the green man.
On to the main event. The Eternal Flame. Legend had it that the flame was lit and guarded every night by the green man. It was the only job he was capable of doing since being electrocuted. It was said that he was very protective of the flame. Well, we had to make the trek through the woods to find it. Several minutes of wondering, actually following a semi type path worn down we came upon a small clearing. There it was, the eternal flame but disappointment set in again. The eternal flame was merely a gas line main with a pilot light. And, there was no green man to be found guarding the flame. What a gip.
I took my wife (girlfriend at the time) to the ghost lights once in my convertible. Yea, I had the top down. I tried to persuade her to come see the eternal flame but she wasn’t buying it, nor did she want to go see the glowing tombstone. Or the Glowing Tree at the top of the road. About the only scary thing that night was when I heard a thump and ran over a large rock in the road. I thought I was going to get a flat tire.
However, as I was opening the car door in Patty’s driveway after a long fun evening, there lodged in the side of the door, was a large bloody hook.
