I have been going to Geneva On The Lake for over 50 years. Way back in the 1970’s erosion from Lake Erie began affecting the beach and the highway that leads into the small resort town.

One house I always kept my eye on coming in was a small gray house on the lake side of the road. Every year, the house edged closer to the sea. The houses on either side of the gray house methodically succumbed to the ravages of the sea.

Last year, the little gray house was on the verge of dropping over the side. It was now abandoned, windows boarded up, doors nailed shut, a mobile home sharing the lot. Last week coming in for our first Summer visit to Geneva, the house was gone.

To me, that house was almost as iconic to Eddie’s Grill, the most popular joint at Geneva On The Lake. I stopped, snapped the photo above and continued to Geneva looking back in the rear view mirror once or twice before pressing on to Eddie’s Grill.

The Signs Are Everywhere You Look

Suicide Is Painless

Every Summer we venture out to Geneva-On-The-Lake (A local weekend vacation spot that time forgot) at least several times to get our fill of world-famous cheeseburger’s at Eddie’s Grill, super size french fries at Times Square Restaurant, and just plain old-fashioned good food down at the Old Firehouse Winery. I must have passed this sign at least one hundred times and never really took notice of it until the other day. It reminds me of the old television series M.A.S.H. and its iconic destination sign.

On a whim I decided to inspect the sign more closely. To my amazement, my secret Grassy Knoll Institute headquarters was listed on the sign. Holy Hell! How did Woody (The owner of Old Firehouse Winery) know the location of our secret lair?

However, I calmed down a bit after realizing that our headquarters were 666 and 2 tenths of a mile from the sign, not 666 miles listed on the sign. Our secret is still safe.

If you like good food, visit one of the three places mentioned above.
If you like magic, visit Whipps Magic on the strip. Go there late at night, that’s when he’s open.
If you like Karaoke, Time Square restaurant lets you belt out your favorite tune nightly. If you like amusement park rides, sorry, Erieview Park was dismantled but the Ferris Wheel sill stands and is located on the cliff overlooking Lake Erie.
If you like donuts, visit Madsens.
If you like a good time, I’ll see you in Geneva.

Eddie’s Grill Counter View Video

As labor Day approaches on Monday, Eddie’s Grill, the 1950’s style iconic hamburger stand will be closing for the season. Eddie’s Grill has the best cheeseburgers in Ohio. We visited Eddie’s Grill last weekend and bellied up to the counter to place our order.

As you can see, Eddie’s was crowded Saturday afternoon. We were lucky to even get a seat. There were about 25-30 people in line to order take out. Our waitress was friendly and very efficient. Our order was up in less than 10 minutes.

If you plan to visit Eddie’s Grill this season, you need to hurry. Eddie’s is open this Labor Day weekend, the 10th and 11th of September, and the final two days 17th and 18th of September.

Geneva On The Lake Lighthouse

Could It Be The North Wind They'd Been Feeling

Pictured above is the iconic green and white light house located inside the Geneva-On-The-Lake harbor. At one time, it was used to alert ships of shallow water and the shore line. Now it stands dormant still guarding the coastline with my LOGO emblazoned on it for all to see.

Perhaps this very lighthouse was witness to the Edmund Fitzgerald freighter leaving port from Cleveland, Ohio to begin it’s final voyage destined for Whitefish Bay in Canada. On November 10th, 1975, as Gordon Lightfoot sang,
“And later that night,
When his lights went out of sight,
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Ferris Wheel At Geneva On The Lake

A riders view of the Ferris Wheel at Geneva On The Lake, Lake Erie, Ohio. The Ferris Wheel, one of the original rides at the now defunct Erieview Park, now resides behind the Old Firehouse winery. Rides are $2.75 each. This is the only promised attraction of “The Landing” that debuted back in Spring of 2007.

Have a look at the beautiful sunset over the lake as the Ferris wheel rotates quickly around.
