Lost Update – Twilight Zone

Lost Update 06/13/2007

Somewhere in a lonely hotel room,
There’s a guy starting to realize
That eternal fate has turned its back on him,
It’s two a.m………

Tonight, we have entered into the Twilight Zone. This Lost update received some new paint, font, and header in honor of one of the best TV series ever created, The Twilight Zone.
Tonight’s Lost theory connects directly to the 1959-1964 television series, The Twilight Zone, a series that intertwined the supernatural with topical moral events in today’s society. Each episode dealt with a specific topic and character and as the story unfolded it became evident that something more was happening to the people in the story. Same can be said about ABC Lost. The castaways are more than just stranded on the island, there are forces at work of powers unknown. And just like the Twilight Zone, a twist is inserted in the story convoluting the outcome.

Below is how a typical Twilight Zone episode was introduced and ended. If you read carefully the characters introductions, (They are taken from Rod Serling’s opening monologue’s,) you will notice they describe the Lost cast almost perfectly. The text and names were slightly altered to incorporate the Lost series.
Perhaps the writers of Lost are Twilight Zone fans and have created a “Revised” series for the new millennium.

I suggest you tune into the Sci-Fi channel during the lateness of the evening and witness for yourself the spectable, or spector, of what is the Twilight Zone.

Prologue

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Monologue

Respectfully submitted for your approval… The place is here, the time is now, and the journey into the shadows that we’re about to watch could be our journey. A journey that begins at a typical airport filled with anonymous travelers. The passengers of Oceanic flight 815, a collection of improbable circumstances stuck together in a prolonged nightmare in which fear, loneliness and the unexplainable walk hand in hand through the shadows.

In a moment we’ll start collecting clues as to the whys, the whats and the wheres. We will not end the nightmare, we’ll only explain it… because this is the Twilight Zone.

Cast Of Characters

Meet Jack Shephard, Doctor. A man in search of answers and perhaps redemption. A man thrust into uncontrollable events as he mourns the death of his father and his choices in love and life.

Her name is Kate Austen. She’s twenty-seven years old. Her occupation: Grifter. At present on vacation, driving cross-country to Los Angeles, California, from Manhattan. Major incident on Highway 11 in Pennsylvania, perhaps to be filed away under accidents you walk away from. But from this moment on, Kate austen’s companion on a trip to California will be terror; her route – fear; her destination – quite unknown.

Mr. Jin Kwon, a gentleman who has lived his life in a gleeful rage; and the young lady, who’s just beat the hasty retreat is Mr. Kwon’s wife, Sun. She’s lived her life as if during each ensuing hour she had a dentist appointment. There’s yet a third member of the company soon to be seen. He now resides in a hotel room and he is the kind of character to be found only at the end of this journey.

James “Sawyer” Ford is 36 years old. He’s been a salesman, a dispatcher, a truck driver, a con man, a bookie, and a part-time bartender. This is a cheap man, a nickel-and-dime man, with a cheapness that goes past the suit and the shirt; a cheapness of mind, a cheapness of taste, a tawdry little shine on the seat of his conscience, and a dark-room squint at a world whose sunlight has never gotten through to him. As fate would have it, Sawyer is about to venture into a world where he will need all his past attributes, and some he doesn’t know he has.

Shannon Rutherford, age twenty-five, young woman waiting for life to begin on a rainy September night. Not a very imaginative type is Miss Rutherford, not given to undue anxiety or fears, or for that matter even the most temporal flights of fancy. Like most young career women, she has a generic classification as a, quote, girl with a head on her shoulders, end of quote. All of which is mentioned now because in just a moment the head on Miss Rutherford’s shoulders will be put to a test. Circumstances will assault her sense of reality and a chain of nightmares will put her sanity on a block. Shannon Rutherford, who in one minute will wonder is she’s going mad.

Boone Carlyle, perhaps doesn’t know it at the time, but it’s an exodus. Somewhere up the road he’s looking for sanity. And somewhere up the road, he’ll find something else.

Bernard and Rose Nadler, a gentle and infinitely patient couple, whose lives have been a hope chest with a rusty lock and a lost set of keys. But in just a moment that hope chest will be opened, and an improbable reality will try to bedeck the drabness of these two people’s failure-laden lives with the gold and precious stones of fulfillment.

Michael Dawson and son Walt. What you have just witnessed, father and son reunion, could be the end of a particularly terrifying nightmare. It isn’t – it’s the beginning. Although Michael Dawson doesn’t know it, he is about to enter a strange new world, too incredible to be real, too real to be a dream.

Witness a very pregnant Claire Littleton. Single mom. Alone. Exiting the doctor’s office to whereabouts unknown. And at this moment we have just finished walking with her in a nightmare. In a moment she’ll wake up and we’ll remain at her side. The problem here is that both Claire and you will reach a point where it might be difficult to decide which is reality and which is nightmare, a problem uncommon perhaps but rather peculiar.

John Locke, portrait of a broken man. A man who’s begun his dying early. A man who would probably give an arm or a leg or a part of his soul to have another chance, to be able to rise up and shake the dirt from his body and the bad dreams that infest his consciousness.

Sayid Jarrah, survivor, an eye witness to man’s imperfection, an observer of the very human trait of hate and a chronicler of the last chapter–the one reading “Redemption.” Not a prediction of what is to be, just a projection of what could be.

You’re looking at Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, luckiest man almost alive. A man who carries on his shoulder a chip the size of the national debt. A man who has lived a meaningless, pointless, failure-laden life and who at this moment looks for an escape. Any escape, any way, anything, anybody, to get out of the rut. And this flight is just what Hugo is waiting for.

Charlie Pace, fading rock star. A nondescript, commonplace little man where in a few moments, will have to concern himself with survival, addiction, and respect.

Epilogue

Dr. Jack Shephard, lately returned from a place “back there,” a journey into time with highly questionable results, proving on one hand that the threads of history are woven tightly and the skein of events cannot be undone, but on the other hand, there are small fragments of tapestry that can be altered. Tonight’s thesis to be taken as you will, in the Twilight Zone.

Twilight Zone By Golden Earring

It’s two a.m., the fear has gone
I’m sittin’ here waitin’, the gun still warm
Maybe my connection is tired of takin’ chances
Yeah there’s a storm on the loose, sirens in my head
I’m wrapped up in silence, all circuits are dead
I cannot decode, my whole life spins into a frenzy

Help I’m steppin’ into the twilight zone
The place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon’s been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go, now that I’ve gone too far
Help I’m steppin’ into the twilight zone
The place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon’s been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go, now that I’ve gone too far
Soon you will come to know,
When the bullet hits the bone
Soon you will come to know, when the bullet hits the bone

I’m falling down a spiral, destination unknown
A double-crossed messenger, all alone
I can’t get no connection, can’t get through, where are you
Well the night weighs heavy on his guilty mind
This far from the borderline
And when the hit man comes
He knows damn well he has been cheated

Help I’m steppin’ into the twilight zone
The place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon’s been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go, now that I’ve gone too far
Help I’m steppin’ into the twilight zone
The place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon’s been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go, now that I’ve gone too far
Soon you will come to know, when the bullet hits the bone
Soon you will come to know, when the bullet hits the bone

Holy high hell. This is your best effort yet for Lost. I kind of agree that the cast could be characters from a former Zone episode. TZ is one of my favorite scifi shows as well. And of course, this was submitted for your approval.

is there no children to relate to walt?

    Lone Wolf – Posted 6/13/2007
Very interesting, i have to say that it looks very convincing, maybe the writers did fashion Lost after the twilight zone. I now must go and research some episodes. This is great.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/13/2007
Morgan, yes, there was an episode called PIP, starring jack Klugman and Billy Mumy, where the father see’s his son young again, at an amusement park, knowing that he was killed in a war.

    ska2682 – Posted 6/13/2007
Very solid effort! Replaces CSN&Y as my new favorite theory!

    Anon – Posted 6/13/2007
shocked. Amazing. This is something to look into. Do you have the other characters written up? Ben, juliet, Richard, Joshua, Tom, Desmond?

    emma – Posted 6/13/2007
Very well done. I love the Twilight Zone and have always thought Lost was similar to it. I’m sure the producers at least modeled the beginning after the Twilight Zone, when the word “Lost” flashes on the black screen with weird sound effects.
Like what Anon said–you don’t have anything for the others, Dharma, Desmond or Danielle or anything. You should at least do the Tailies, because they were on the plane. (Ana Lucia, Libby, Eko & you did Bernard.)
We have now entered the Twilight Zone–and this comment is submitted for your approval. This has got to be one of your best updates yet.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/13/2007
Anon, Emma, no, I do not have the other characters written up. I decided to just use the opening pilot cast, plus Bernard because he was teamed with his wife, Rose.
Off the top of my head, “The Old Man In The Cave” is a perfect match for Joshua.

    emma – Posted 6/13/2007
btw i hope they have a 4th of July TZ marathon. i love tz marathons

    emma – Posted 6/13/2007
don’t you guys mean Jacob, not Joshua?

    LOTGK – Posted 6/13/2007
Yea, Jacob, not to be confused with U2’s Joshua Tree.

    ska2682 – Posted 6/14/2007
I think using only the pilot Losties as a basis for the Twilight Zone is a solid choice. If that truly is the way the producers are going, then they can use a few instances in characters that cross, and then add whomever they want as the series progresses. With so many people added over the course of the last couple of seasons, and they all coincidentally run into each other in their “other” life, I think it ties in nicely to the theory.

    Crystal – Posted 6/14/2007
Good Job! I love it! I am too much of a fraidy cat to watch TZ after my first experience… but thats another story. The white on balck was a little difficult for my eyes, but it sure did add to the whole feel on the TZ theory.

    Cyn – Posted 6/14/2007
oh my, Patrick you’ve outdone yourself on this look. as for both series…uh, not a Lost watcher so no clue but loved the Twilight Zone. just don’t make TV like that anymore. and also big fan of Rod Serling.

    Valdunagan – Posted 6/14/2007
    Incredible race of giants here.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/14/2007
    OK, I’m liking this Valdunagan,…
    How’s about…
There’s somebody out on the wing!!!
What’s your favorite Twilight Zone catch phrase?

    Gumby – Posted 6/14/2007
Youre ten years old again Pip, how can you be ten years old!

    LOTGK – Posted 6/14/2007
    It’s A Cookbook!!!

    emma – Posted 6/14/2007
To Serve Man–it’s a cookbook LOL!!!

    Max Jackl – Posted 6/14/2007
    Going my way?

    Jack Sparrow – Posted 6/14/2007
Fate’s the name. Henry J. Fate.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/14/2007
Twilight Zone episode for Desmond, one of several, but here is the first. It is called judgement day.
Desmond, At this moment his ship is one day out of Liverpool, her destination New York. Duly recorded on this ship’s log is the sailing time, course to destination, weather conditions, temperature, longitude and latitude. But what is never recorded in a log is the fear that washes over a deck like fog and ocean spray. Fear like the throbbing strokes of engine pistons, each like a heartbeat, parceling out every hour into breathless minutes of watching, waiting and dreading. It travels alone like an aged blind thing groping through the unfriendly dark, stalked by unseen periscopes of steel killers. Yes, Desmond’s ship is a frightened ship, and she carries with her a premonition of death.”

The storyline has a man repeating a sequence of events over and over and no matter what he does, he cannot change the course of events. This man is in hell.
Sounds just like Desmond except he sailed on a boat and shipwrecked on the Lost island. He is repeating a sequence of events that he has no control over.

    emma – Posted 6/14/2007
Cool it’s like the course correction or something. Is that a real TZ episode?

    LOTGK – Posted 6/14/2007
Yes, it is a real episode. They all are.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/14/2007
Here is an episode for Richard, who never seems to age.
It is titled, Long Live Walter Jameson. Here is the monologue.
You’re looking at Act One, Scene One, of a nightmare, not restricted to witching hours or dark, rainswept nights. Professor Richard, popular beyond words, who talks of the past as if it were the present, who conjures up the dead as if they were alive. In the view of this man, Professor Samuel Kittridge, Richard has access to knowledge that couldn’t come out of a volume of history, but rather from a book on black magic, which is to say that this nightmare begins at noon.”
The storyline is about a man that doesn’t age. While attempting to marry a young woman, her father finds out the truth and forbids the marriage. Later on, one of the man’s old ex wives murders him for leaving her for a younger woman.
    Yes, that sounds like Richard.

  3. […] From the pilot episode of season one, I formulated two theories on what was happening on Lost. One is the virtual reality theory. The second is The Rod Serling Effect. If lost is based on the twilight zone, wouldn’t Serling get royalties. I would think so.

Rod Serling is dead. But even so, his wife or estate would receive the royalties if Lost was based on his show.
