Lost Update – I Am An Island

Posted by LOTGK on June 6, 2007

lost island

Season III

Lost Update 06/06/2007

I am a rock,
I am an island.
Ive built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
Its laughter and its loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

It was announced several weeks ago that ABC’s Lost was being extended for three more seasons for a total of six. And you cannot blame the producers and writers because once we all got a good look at the size of the island the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on, it’s going to take that long to explore and explain it.

Giant uncharted islands hidden from the world are hard to come by. While watching Lost over the past three seasons, I noticed some similarities of the Lost island to another famous island. Like the Crosby, Stills, Nash, And Young hippy update, I am asking you to read the entire update with an open mind. Embrace both islands, both sets of characters, both stories.

I liken the Lost island to Skull island. Skull island was the island inhabited by King Kong and assorted other giant creatures such as dinosaurs and giant snakes. It was an island that time forgot. An island that was not on any mariners map, and the only hint that an island even existed was rumors from the local fishermen spinning tales of a mythical island where a great beast lives and anyone who traveled to explore the island never returned.

Skull island also had a native tribe of people that lived there. They worshiped the beast, the great Kong, the great King Kong, a giant ape that towered over the tree’s. The tribe feared the monster, (King Kong) more than worshiped him but being trapped on the island, a rudimentary religion was formed and Kong became the God. They would sacrifice a young woman to appease Kong. And Kong likes blondes.

Sound like any island we know? The similarities are striking.
First of all, both islands are huge. skull island was miles long and wide with huge mountains, gigantic waterfalls, and a jungle that went on for miles and miles. Pretty much ditto for the Lost island. I could understand back in 1933, when King Kong was released, (The movie, not the ape) that an island the size of Texas could stay hidden if it were so far out of the shipping lanes. But in todays age of GPS, NASA spy satellites, and world mapping, there is no way an island bigger than Hawaii can be hidden, regardless of where it is located.

Now that we established the size of both islands, lets analyze the monsters on both. For Skull island, there was of course King Kong, the giant ape with a temper and thing for blondes. Also plenty of ferocious dinosaurs and giant snakes.

The Lost island also has monsters. As in the invisible giant monster, and the smoke monster, and another monster, a sheep in wolves clothing, also known as Ben. King Kong ripped all it’s enemies to threads and brutally killed them. Same can be said for Ben. Any enemy that challenged Ben, he killed them.

Another similarity with Kong and Ben is that both were captured and escaped. Kong was taken to New York in shackles and put on display for all the world to see. Ben was also captured, shackled and marched back to camp. Kong escaped, killed many more people, and sought sanctuary with the closest thing he could find to his own surroundings, where he was King to everything he saw. You guessed it. Same goes for Ben. Ben escaped and returned to his camp and began to formulate his plan for total dominance.

And did anyone notice that Kong had a thing for blondes? Kong went Ape when he saw Fay Wray, a blonde actress strapped to his sacrificial post. Looking at Ben, he was in love with Anne, and again with Juliet. Both blondes.

Sidenote: Ann Darrow was Fay Wray’s character’s name, the blonde. Ann is also the name of the girl Ben loved.

Does everyone remember the great wall the native islanders built to keep Kong away from them? Doesn’t it remind you of the big electric poles that surround the compound. And it’s purpose, you guessed it, to keep the black smoke monster away.

Speaking of the native islanders on Skull Island, perhaps we can match them up to the original “Others” on the Lost island. More people arrived to Skull island just as more people arrived on Lost island.

In the end, King Kong plummeted to his death defending himself and his blonde captive. The end tag line was, the army didn’t kill Kong. Beauty killed the beast. Perhaps Ben has the same fate in store.

In essence, Lost is a remake of the 1933 movie, King Kong. Ben is Kong incarnate. Juliet is Fay Wray. Jack is Jack Driscoll. Jack Driscoll was the man in love with Ann Darrow and went searching for her when the others returned to the safety of the beach. Jack on Lost has a love interest with Juliet. It is all so obvious.

Let’s open this first Lost Summer installment discussion for debate. I’m listening.

The next installment takes us back to the very beginning right up to the season three finale. The working title for this update is aptly named “Beyond The Sea.”

I think the analogy has one major flaw. I do not think the Others are “Worshipping” Ben. For one reason or another, he has become their “leader”, which I do not think has been fully explained yet. The Others do show the hostility to the Losties that the Skull Island inhabitants showwed the boat’s crew. I think there are similarities between the two, but I also think that there are major points that discredit it as well. All I know is that I am glad to be talking about Lost again, even though we are 7 months away from the next season.

SKA, agreed on the worship part, “The tribe feared the monster, (King Kong) more than worshiped him but being trapped on the island, a rudimentary religion was formed and Kong became the God.”
The islanders had no choice but to appease Kong, and so it seems on the Lost island as well.
What “Major points” discredit the Kong VS Lost? I know there has to be many, just whipping up conversation.

    ska2682 – Posted 6/6/2007
I think one of the major points is that the film crew went there on purpose while the Losties ended up on the island by accident. However, the Dharma Initiative went there on purpose, what that purpose is is yet to be seen. I think there are solid points that show similarities, but I can’t agree 100%. I guess another point that would agree with this theory is that Skull Island is the island that time forgot about, and during the “reveal” special on ABC the producers made mention that the island is “somewhere” in the space/time continuom. What that means exactly, I don’t know. Every theory that you have come up with so far all have valid points. My favorite so far has been the CSN&Y theory. So far that has made the most sense to me. Just my opinion.

    Lost Fan – Posted 6/6/2007
Very entertaining. Maybe the ship from Skull island is the Black Rock ship.

    Lead Scientist – Posted 6/6/2007
Lost Fan, are you suggesting that Lost island is actually Skull island? Very interesting.

    emma – Posted 6/6/2007
Very interesting theory but as Ska said there are several flaws.
For instance, since when was Ben ever in love with Juliet? I have no idea where you got that notion. (–and I don’t think he will die defending her! esp. now that she betrayed him.) And if I remember correctly, Annie had more brown hair. Of course the blonde thing just doesnt really matter.
I think it’s more likely that King Kong is represented by the smoke monster (maybe Jacob) than Ben. Makes a lot more sense to me.
It’s not perfect, but great work figuring this out!

    LOTGK – Posted 6/6/2007
Emma, it several episodes, it is strongly implied that Ben and Juliet are involved. Watch season three carefully, it will sink in.
Anne had blonde hair. Not Marilyn Monroe blonde, but blonde nonetheless.
Ben compared to Kong is the analogy. Not the physical appearance, but in the way both control the island.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/6/2007
And just wait until you read next week’s update. We’re going to redo the entire place.

    Gumby – Posted 6/7/2007
I have to say, this is a very good read. You just don’t throw out a half baked half thought out theory like others do. Yours is well done my friend. Well done.

    Crystal – Posted 6/7/2007
Well I have no King Kong experience. I have never watched it, so I can’t throw out any major points to discredit… But If this were a virtual reality project, I can see how old movies could influence the “dream”. But… where do the aliens come in , haha.
It seems to me that there are too few points that would connect the two islands and really too many that don’t.
I agree with ska with the CSN&Y theory, there are many songs that agree with all sorts of connections to Lost.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/7/2007
Thanks Gumby. I’m glad I’m not half baked, but completely baked.
Crystal, I recommend watching it, the 1933 version, original version.
But this theory doesn’t touch on virtual reality, it is a stand alone theory. And no aliens in this one.
I know both story lines do not match exactly, but which points don’t connect the two islands? When I wrote this, I thought there was plenty of “Theory” evidence to post this.

    Jack Sparrow – Posted 6/7/2007
Honestly, I still cannot believe that an island the size of the LOST island in not on any maps or charts. That island is huge. Mountains with waterfalls, miles away, and not just one set of mountains, but several, with several waterfalls. A tropical paradise.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/7/2007
That’s the key to Lost Jack. It’s unbelievable, hence, many theories abound about what’s really happening there. I felt the same way about the island size, to big not to go unnoticed unless of course it is shielded by an unexplained force yet to be revealed.
But there it is, an island hidden in the Pacific, such as Skull island, the island where King Kong lived. An island that has vast mountains and huge waterfalls as well. That is how I began writing this theory, and the cast and plot line just fell into place.

    emma – Posted 6/7/2007
Yes, this is an extremely well-thought-out, full-baked interesting theory. I agree with everyone on that one. The Jack Driscoll part is cool.
LOTGK, I’m not saying what you told me was wrong, but Juliet did have a love interest with Goodwin…and I still don’t see evidence of Ben having a thing for her. maybe a tiny bit, but it’s not really evident. And she hates him.

    LOTGK – Posted 6/7/2007
Do you think Fay Wray liked Kong when she first met him?
And it is merely a quickly realized theory, no basis of fact except for what’s inside my mind. And that sometimes can be very scary.

    Crystal – Posted 6/8/2007
I don’t think that Juliet and Ben have had a relationship in the past because she was there to help the women. And I remember Ben saying “that’s okay Annie wanted to get pregnant.” So I think that Ben would have been faithful to his wife after being with her since they were little. And since Juliet has only been there so many years I don’t think that Ben could get over Annie that quick.
    Just some thoughts…

    LOTGK – Posted 6/8/2007
Crystal, if this was concerning Lost only, I would agree with you, but when you add King Kong into the mix, and comparing both Kong and Ben, it is different. Kong did not have a relationship with Ann Darrow, he simply kidnapped her and abused her. Ben, in essence, has done the same thing with Juliet, he kidnaps her under the guise that she will only be on the island for a limited time and is free to go when she pleases, and of course he has abused her, as he has everyone on the island.

    RIDDICK – Posted 6/9/2007
ummm, i noticed all are concerned with whom loves whom, & getting on with whom, or killing whom.
several episodes back, locke ‘blew up’ the submarine. OR DID HE? how come he was soaking wet when captured by the others?
if you replay the scene, there is no sign of the sub, leading me to think that locke submerged the sub, escaped through a bottom divers hatch, resealed said hatch, swam back to the pier, planted the C4, and in fact only blew up the end of the pier?!?!
    also…
in another episode: the black smoke monster..
if it can travel through the trees at some height off the ground, how was it that the ‘sonic fence’ was able to stop it? why didn’t it just go up & over the sonic barrier?
    also…
where did the sonic barrier technology come from?…..
    ALIENS OF COURSE!!

    emma – Posted 6/9/2007
Why wouldn’t Locke blow up the sub? He wants to stop all possibilities of getting off the island. Why wouldn’t he?

    losty – Posted 6/9/2007
I feel like there are several questions that people have forgetten this past season that have a major role in the answer to lost……..why was punching the code in season 2 “saving the world?” what was that about locke selling weed? u think that was also another flash forward? How come Hurley proved u can make ur own luck but then dezzy dooms charlie with all that fate stuff? how did juliet go from sweet to killer?

    FOX – Posted 6/11/2007
I want answers. Why was Penny on the screen when they were in the looking glass. All the frequencies in the world and Penny is on the one that has been jammed for who knows how many years. If this is Virtual Reality then it is desmond’s dream. Charlie does not exist he has been created in Desmond’s mind.

    FOX – Posted 6/11/2007
Locke who makes things difficult. When he says to Jack “It’s not supposed to happen this way” and then walks away disappointed. What is he disappointed about?

    FOX – Posted 6/11/2007
So how does The only people with the castaways that knows what is going on is Ben, Locke, and Juliet. Why won’t they tell them what is going on.

    FOX – Posted 6/11/2007
Do you remember those old books where you read a page and then when you get to the bottom it says If you want to go right go to page 23 if you think he should go left go to page 72.
Well you always cheat and read both outcomes.
The last page Jack read was If you phone for help….. Your life takes a turn for the worst.

    FOX – Posted 6/11/2007
Darhma Initiative is interesting in itself. Break it down and define it. Iniative – to carry out a plan
Darhma – teachings or written doctrine of Buddah
To carry out the wriiten plan of Buddah?

    emma – Posted 6/11/2007
Fox–when you say Ben, Locke and Juliet know what is going on, what are you talking about? What is it that only they know?
About the DHARMA initiative–have you even seen the “Sri Lanka” DHARMA video with Alvar Hanso about the end of the world and the Valenzetti equation? That has got to do with the dharma meaning duty or whatever.–and also DHARMA is an acronym. Department of Heuristics etc or something like that.
