Week 02: Vikings Lose To Colts 18-15

How Far Away Are We From Being A Good team

We're This Far Away From Being A Good Team

The Minnesota Vikings led for 59 minutes and 57 seconds and lost by a field goal. Joe Montana (Peyton Manning) had yet another spectacular come from behind victory to lead the Colts to over the Vikings 18-15.

Today was a typical game for Tarvaris Jackson. He completed 14/24 for 124 yards, no TD’s and one fumble. But that doesn’t really tell how poorly he played. That’s right folks, Jackson played poorly once again. Cases in point:
Vikings are driving, Jackson throws to Berrian on a 8 yard pass that if on target would have been a first down. Instead, he throws it into the dirt. Result, a field goal. And, At the end of the first half, with 1:51 remaining, (Deja Vu) Jackson calls play, yells at Rice to change positions, allows 30 seconds to tick off the clock and burns a time out. Poor clock management. And, In another drive, Jackson sailed a pass over everyone’s head forcing yet another punt. And, Jackson fumbles! And, Jackson, during another drive, had two straight bad passes forcing a punt. It seems that when Jackson needs to make a play, he falters. When Manning had to make the plays today, he came through.

But it wasn’t all Jackson’s fault for the loss. Tight End Shaincoe dropped yet another pass, this time dropped a would be TD. Is Troy Williamson still available? Seriously, Shaincoe needs to be benched as well.

We can all pile on Brad Childress at this point. WTF was he thinking in his play calling? The Vikings were leading 15-7 and had the ball. They needed 4 yards on third down. Instead of going for a high percentage play, Childress calls a long bomb to receiver Berrian. Of course it’s not complete. Berrian was shut out today in catches. The Vikings are then forced to punt stopping the clock with the incompletion allowing the Colts valuable time to move down the field. Which they did.

Wait, there’s more. The game is now tied at 15 and the Vikings have the ball at their own 3 yard line with 1:51 remaining. They need to move the chains and exhaust the clock and move into overtime. Instead, Childress calls a passing play and Jackson throws incomplete. Stops the clock and forces a punt. This allowed the Colts enough time to move down the field and kick the game winning field goal with 3 seconds left.

Silver lining:
Adrian Peterson was in all pro form. 160 yards rushing on 29 attempts. The defense pressured Manning enough to keep them under 20 points. The Vikings recorded two sacks and plenty of pressure. Held the Colts to 25 yards rushing. Chester Taylor did an excellent job at kick returns with a 31 yard average.

Bold Predictions
Ray Edwards predicted he would break the single season sack record of 22.5 sacks. That means he needs 1.438 sacks per game. He had zero sacks in game two leaving him 2.876 sacks behind. He must record 4.314 sacks next week to stay on track.

Adrian Peterson predicted a 2000 yard rushing season. That means he needs 125 yards per game. He had 160 yards rushing in game two totaling 263 giving him a cushion of 13 yards. He must run for 112 yards next week to stay on track.

Vikings hosts the 2-0 Carolina Panthers next week. Joe Montana should throw for another 300 yards. If Jackson and Childress play and call the same style of play the previous two games, the Vikings will be 0-3.

On a side note. Tarvaris Jackson is now 0-2 for this season, 8-4 in 2007, and 0-2 in 2006 for a combined record of 8-8. Where are all those Jackson supporters touting his win loss record? Thought so.

It seems that we are in for a very long season. Tarvaris Jackson, although talented, is not yet ready to lead this team and with Gus as backup, the team can expect no better that 8-8. I am bunned out about that prospect but maybe Frerotte will have one of theose Cunningham type seasons with the Vikings.

Want my bold prediction. Vikings will go 7-9 and by the end of the season, Booty will get his shot.

  3. Anti-christ said

Jared Allen reneged on his deal with me. He will not have a good season, ever again. As for Jackson, not even I can help him.
