Blizzard Of 2007

Posted by LOTGK on December 14, 2007

To welcome in the warm summer sun of July first, I present to you my trip to New York City back in February several months ago. And yes, not everything went smooth. (Go figure huh!)

February of 2007, blizzard in Manhattan, New York, that crippled the city and closed the airport. Of course it would be the last day of the International Toy Fair. It seems that bad weather follows me wherever I go.

The photo above is of Laguardia Airport about 15 minutes before all flights were canceled. I was right behind the guy in the red NYC cap. It was now a race of who could dial airport hotels on their cell phones the fastest. I didn’t win. Instead, I had to settle for the Best Western hotel in lower Queens. Although it was only 8 miles from the airport, I swear the sign post we past said, Twilight Zone next exit.

Of course the hotel did not have a restaurant. And only one elevator that was so slow that when I reached my floor, I had a full grown beard when I stepped out. It had warm cookies though. Big Freakin Deal! I checked into my room and quickly noticed that the entry door was not real secure. In fact, if I were to push hard on the door handle, I could snap it off. Oh well, it was for only one night.

The night check in clerk did say there was a restaurant down a block and it was open. My choices were eat nothing, eat more of the warm cookies, or trek on over to the restaurant. I opted for the restaurant. I should have stuck with the cookies.

Walking up the avenue in lower Queens in the blizzard wasn’t the best idea but the neon sign was getting closer. Alas, it wasn’t a restaurant, but a bar. The Bantry Bar. An Irish themed bar. Entering, I didn’t think it was open, there was no one there. No bartender, no waitress, no cook. I called out, “Anyone home” and a blond waitress came out from behind a door. She asked if I were there for dinner and I said yes and she told me to pick a seat.

I’ll stop there with the bar food as it will be appearing in a latter Blue Plate Special critique.

Luckily the weather broke that evening and I was able to escape the big apple the next morning.
