Coke Verses Pepsi

Posted by LOTGK on November 29, 2007

For this debate, I am going to add a twist just like so many TV reality shows. I am going to compare both brands semi-diet products, Coke C2 and Pepsi Edge.

To set the ground rules, both brands boast half the carbs and half the calories but all the taste of their respected flagship brands. Both brands have artificial sweeteners in their formula’s. I, and you with your votes at the exit polls will be the judge of that.

I purchased both brands plus the regular Coke and Pepsi to use them as the control set. I began with Coke. The cost for the 20 ounce plastic bottle was the same as the C2 brand but I noticed that an 8 pack of C2 cost roughly 43 cents per can compared to 33 cents per can for regular coke. This makes me wonder why the Coca-Cola corporation is charging more for a product that has half the calories, sugar, and carbs. Following suit, Pepsi Edge was also more expensive than regular Pepsi at 48 cents and 33 cents. Unless the price drops to the regular brand level, these two new brands will die a slow death. Remember Pepsi Free?

Now to the taste test. Again, I began with Coke and took a sip of Coke for the control set and then a sip of Coke C2. C2 tasted OK and was actually close in comparison to regular coke. And a small aftertaste. That is a big plus. Diet cola’s have a terrible aftertaste. Coke C2 did not.

Pepsi however, did not fare as well in the taste department. It tasted flat, a little “Tinny” and had an aftertaste. Not a bad one, but it was there. It kind of tasted like a diet Pepsi with a packet of sweet and low poured in.

Recommendations: For Coke C2, the taste was adequate. Almost like regular Coke but not that big kick at the end. A good kick, but not as hard as regular Coke. I will continue to buy the product for now. I am hoping that the price goes down. If it maintains a high cost, I will discontinue use.

For Pepsi Edge. There is no edge. The formula needs to be tweaked to eliminate the aftertaste that turned me off immediately. It doesn’t matter if the cost was lower than regular Pepsi, I would not buy this product again if it maintains the same formula.

The Grassy Knoll Institute proclaims Coke C2 the winner of the cola war hands down.
