Game 07: Vikings Lose To Eagles 23-16

Posted by LOTGK on October 29, 2007

fire brad childress

“Grasshopper, when you can take the pebble from my hand, then it will be time for you to leave.” The above quote, taken from the 1970’s television series, Kung Fu, describes coach Brad Childress perfectly.

Kane, the young monk learning from the wise old skilled monks, goes through years of training and each time he thinks he is ready, he is tested by his old master. And each time, the old master tells “Grasshopper” that it is not yet time to leave.

Childress took over the Minnesota Vikings last year. His rookie record was 6-10 and so far this year, his record is 2-5. That’s 8-15 over all. It was not yet time for him to leave the temple.

I will say this once again. Childress has made several critical errors in managing the Vikings and it has cost the team greatly.

#1: He did not pursue a legitimate back up quarterback during the off season to support Tarvaris Jackson, the raw quarterback from Alabama State.

Instead, he signs Kelly Holcomb as the backup. Kelly I have about two good passes in me per game Holcomb. We could have had Jeff Garcia, who just happens to be lighting it up in Tampa these days.

#2: He decided to stick with a raw rookie, (Cook) and an unheralded lineman, (Herrara) instead of pursuing free agents in the off season. Lord knows we had the cap money to do it, over $20 million under the cap, we could have secured two very talented lineman but decided to have them play into shape.

#3: He failed to secure starting caliber wide receivers. Bobby Wade and Robert Furgeson are not starting wideouts. Either is Troy Williamson, who cannot hold onto a pass. Sidney Rice, although plenty of potential and flashes of true talent, is not a starting wideout yet in the NFL. And it shows. Our receivers literally suck worse than a Hoover.

#4: Not knowing how to adjust to the flow of the game. Case in point. Vikings usually look very good in their first offensive possession and either score points or march down the field adding first downs and gaining field position. This is the M.O. in 2006 and so far in 2007. After that, the offense gets stuffed. Childress doesn’t have an answer to the adjustments to the opposing defenses. Hence, our offense sucks.

#5: Recognizing a weakness and knowing how to fix it. Case in point. The defense. The Vikings are solid, more than solid in run defense, no one runs on the Vikings. Why run when you can pass the ball all day against them. Last year and so far this year, the Vikings rank last in pass defense surrendering almost 300 yards passing per game.

To bolster my points:
Vikings offense is ranked 23rd over all. 30th ranked passing offense.

Bobby Wade, the Vikings leading receiver has 19 catches and 219 yards through seven games. And zero TD catches.

The Viking offense is ranked 20th averaging 18.7 points a game. But, if you subtract the 28 points the defense scored, the Vikings average 14.7 points a game. And that is utterly pathetic.

Seriously, does anyone honestly believe Bobby Wade or Robert Furgeson could start on any other NFL team?

I really like the sign above….
It is not yet time to leave Grasshopper.

I really feel like skipping the game reply today. Been there, done that.
Vikings come out hot, march down field, running the ball strong, score a TD. Then struggle the rest of the game.

A few things things though….
Adrian Peterson is exciting to watch. Although he only had 70 yards rushing, (With a 22 yarder called back by penalty) Peterson has that special something that whenever he touches the ball, he cal take it the distance. So far, he is certainly rookie of the year.

Lastly, our offensive line is not what we fans were led to believe. Especially Bryant Mckinnie. Said it last year, said it plenty this year, he gets beat more often than a red headed step child.

The line may be quite adept at run blocking, but cannot pass protect worth a lick. We got 100 million dollars tied up in two players, and we cannot pass protect to give our QB a split second to look down field. Incredible!!!

BTW, the Vikings lost to the Eagles 23-16 and of course had yet another chance to win the game at the end.

Final Thoughts:
Unless Childress rights the Viking ship, and pulls out a winning season, 9-7 at least, he will be fired, and rightly so. Since the Vikes are 2-5, that is a very hard road to travel.

I’ll have the car out in two minutes….

Skol Vikings.
