Vikings Lose To The Slackers

tarvaris jackson

Make it official. The Vikings are out of the playoffs and secured a guaranteed losing record for rookie head coach Brad Childress. (Hey look, Childress just called yet another running play on third and long)
The Vikings now sit at 6-9 after losing to the slack last night in what well be Brett Favre’s last game played at Lambeau field. (Of course, we have been hearing this for the past five years now so who the hell cares anymore) Tarvaris Jackson, rookies quarterback from Alabama state got his first start against the slack and came away with a loss. Jackson only passed 20 times. Not in the quarter, but the entire game.

Before we critique (Blast) coach Childress and his apparent desire to lose the game, let’s shift away from the playoff hunt and look to the future, the 2007 NFL college draft. If the season was over today, the Vikings would have the #8 over all selection. That is pretty darn good. However, if the Vikings would have won against the slackers, they would pick at #18. That is a 10 spot move. Perhaps Childress made several decisions this week. One was to start Tarvaris Jackson, rookie quarterback, first start ever, away game at Green Bay, one of the toughest, loudest, and harshest environments to play, plus the added pressure and media blitz that it might have been Brett Favre’s final game at home. Add that it was on national TV, the NFL Network and you have pressure. The second decision was to devise a game plan to run the ball on third down instead of passing on almost every series.

What does this add up to? The #8 pick over all in the draft. Perhaps Childress saw the season was over and only winning would worsen his draft selection. Remember, by losing against the slack, he moved up 10 spots to the 8th spot. The Vikings only had three first downs and the offense playcalling was out of character as they ran on third down almost every possession. Almost like Childress was trying to lose. Also, Tarvaris is a mobile quarterback, unlike Johnson, yet, the plays called for Jackson to take a 10 step drop back and stay in the pocket. Why on earth wouldn’t Childress have Jackson roll out of the pocket to find a less crowded lane to throw the ball in? I’m just sayin. We pick #8.

Does anyone else think coach Childress is an arrogant son-of-a-bitch? And what’s with all the cloak and dagger during media days? And WTF, benching Marcus Robinson even when he says he was ready to play last week, and this week? I kind of got the feeling that Zygi Wilf, owner of the Vikings, knows a lot of real estate, but very little about football, or hiring a head coach for that matter. Is it time to cut ties with Childress?

Penalties. WTF? The Vikings are the #1 team in the NFL committing penalties. At least Childress taught them something. This should be the number one priority in the offseason, mini camp, training camp, and preseason. Maybe the new coach will implement the discipline needed not to lead the league in penalties.

Ben Leber is a keeper. Troy Williamson is not. Use him for kickoff returns and pray that he wants to catch the ball next year. Otherwise, cut his ass. Ryan Cook, jury is still out on him. Rookie of the year: Cedric Griffin.

To the draft: With the 8th over all pick, the Vikings select, Ted Ginn, Wide receiver, The Ohio State University. Ginn has blazing speed, maybe the fastest man in college, and the NFL. Excellent kick and punt returner which would pay early dividends for the special teams right away. And oh yea, we need a wide receiver and Ginn fills the bill. He has the height, the power and strength, comes from a big school, and runs good routes. Ginn would add an immediate deep threat if we had a quarterback to throw it down field. That leaves Brad Johnson on the bench.

Next week is the last game, the Rams at home. Rams if they win this Sunday will be in the playoff hunt and will need a win against the Vikings. Methinks however that Childress wants that #8 over all pick and a win will spoil his chances for that.

Brad Childress, as a Christmas gift, called Marcus Robinson and cut him today. Robinson just happens to the leading wide receiver even after missing 7 games this season with two games just because Childress felt like it.

Robinson commented that he had very little communication with Childress and it echo’s the same sentiment of Brad Johnson referring to Childress.

Childress claims that his offense is a “Kick ass” scheme but the players are not executing it correctly! He states that some of the players are not good fits for the scheme. Then why the hell did he draft them, sign them, pick them up?

I think Childress has to take partial responsibility for the offensive woes as well. He also needs to nip in the bud the player dessention especially players cut for no reason. Players talk, and what free agent would want to come to Minnesota with the shroud of darkness of childress?

SKOL Vikings!
