Vikings Lose To Jets 26-13

The Tarvaris Jackson Era Begins Today

The Minnesota Vikings lost to the New York Jets today, 26-13 almost completely eliminating them from playoff contention. It was a difficult road coming into today’s game but with the loss, even San Francisco has pulled ahead of the Vikings in the wild card chase. Brad Johnson and the offense was anemic as ever scoring only on their first series after forcing a fumble on the Jets Pennington. From there, the offense didn’t generate enough electricity to power a penlight. Until Tarvaris Jackson was inserted at the end of the third quarter.

Coach Brad Childress finally relented after a reign of boo’s cascaded down from the unhappy fans when Johnson was to slow to avoid the sack or throw an incomplete pass. The fans have had enough of Johnson and demanded change. Childress left Johnson in to long. Some, and I am one of them, believed Johnson should have been benched several weeks ago, when the Vikings dipped two games under five hundred in favor of Jackson to give him the much needed experience and practice with the first unit during “Live” games. If Jackson is the future QB, why not get him some reps in real games?

To the game. Tarvaris Jackson was 14-23 for 177 yards with one TD and one interception. All in the 4th quarter except for one 12 yard pass completion in the final play of the 3rd quarter. But the stats do not tell the entire story. TJax avoided three sacks creating positive yards to keep the drives alive. He also added much needed mobility to gain that extra half second to scan the field and find the open receiver or to avoid the rush and sack.

Move forward to Thursday nights game against the Slackers. Tarvaris Jackson gets his first NFL start against the Slackers, at Lamebeau field, on national TV, which is perhaps Bret Favre’s last home game as once again he has hinted that this may be the last time, may be the last time, I don’t know….. I think the NFL Network is drooling about this sudden interest matchup of two teams with no playoff aspirations.

Cedric Griffin looked like a rookie out there today. He was turned around and looked lost. Here’s to hoping he gets it back together for Thursdays game as Favre will be throwing often his way.

Opposing teams have figured out the Vikings defense. Don’t run against them. Simply spread the offense, and pass all day long on them. Vikings are first in run defense but those stats are misleading because the Vikings are also 27th against the pass. Why run when you can easily pass all day? The Jets Pennington had well over 300 yards passing against the Vikings today. Do you honestly think Favre and the Slackers are going to try and establish a running game Thursday night? Hell no! They are going to come out passing and passing often. Yea, they will add a few runs in there to give the receivers a blow from running down the field but the Slackers and next weeks opponent the Rams will be pass happy.

Troy Williamson. What a shame! He just cannot hold onto the ball. He is open but just cannot haul it in. I fear he is a first round bust. I would expect to see Jason Carter with playing time Thursday as is is paired with Jackson in practice running the second team. His timing should be better than the other receivers at this time.

The Vikings are 6-8 for the season. The Las Vegas odds had the over under at 8-8 for 2006. Amazingly, the Vikings are not out of the playoffs. Dallas, Chicago, New Orleans, and Seattle are division winners and Philadelphia, NY Giants, Green Bay, Atlanta, and San Francisco are ahead of the Vikings for the two wild card spots. Childress must look to the future not only in games, but in players, schemes, and practices.

Here’s hoping the Vikings spoil Bret Favre’s last home game with a big win Thursday night.

SKOL VIKINGS!
