Preseason Game 02: Taking Care Of Business

Vikings win an away outside game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last night in preseason action. Vikings-17, Steelers 10.

Brad Johnson continued his excellent training camp and preseason performance as he went 9-11 and a TD while piloting the first team offense. A new coaching staff and a new offense doesn’t seem to faze Johnson. Not even the loss of Koren Robinson, Vikings #1 receiver, took him out of his game. And big bad Brad even took off for a scramble for a first down last night. Dare I say, “Mid-season form.”Rookie Tavaris Jackson. As like Brad Johnson, is having a very good camp. Last night, Jackson showed his poise in the pocket holding onto the ball while being blindsided sacked. Something Culpepper wasn’t quite able to get a grip on. (Literally) Jackson was also 9-11 and a TD pass. IMO, he has moved into the #2 spot distancing himself from McMahon and O’Sullivan.

Speaking of McMahon… He has looked absolutely lousy in the first two preseason games. And I’m being kind. I know he was brought over by coach Childress from the Eagles because he knew the West Coast offense terminology, but he has not been able to apply it to playing time. Perhaps he has helped the offense in the transition of a new coaching staff, new training staff, and a new offense with plenty of new players. It’s time for McMahon to go. He served his purpose.

Concerning O’Sullivan. By default, we have to keep three QB’s, and the question needs to be asked if we keep him, Mcmahon, or go a completely off the board and pickup or trade for another.

Chester Taylor. 10 carries for 36 yards. And a 31 yarder called back. Add that one rush in and his stats are mighty impressive. And a couple of swing passes as well. He is running hard, always positive yardage. Mewelde Moore, again misses a game due to injury. He best be careful or he will slide down the depth chart. And it’s a shame because he has the talent if he would just stay healthy.

Fason. Serviceable. Not flashy. Henderson rounding out well in the offense.

O line. Starting to play together well. I see a little jelling go on there. What I haven’t seen are to many runs to the left side of the line. Are they holding back to keep film down for opposing NFL teams? Not wanting to show their strength? Perhaps.

Travis Taylor. Had some great catches. Could be the go to guy. Wiggins, nice concentration pulling in the tipped TD pass at the 10 yard line. Williamson, err, to me the jury is still out. Has flashes, and then gets stupid penalties. Needs time, needs time.

Rookie Jason Carter. I believe he has made the team. Very exciting in punt returns, and had some very good catch and runs plus the stretch out for the endzone for the score.

D line. Yea baby. They were pushing and pressing all night. If they stay healthy, should be a dominant front line. D. Scott slashing around the tackle with a great sack. They have enough depth to interchange to keep them fresh. I’m excited about the line.

With Rookie Greenway shelved for the season, he will hurt the depth of the linebackers. Ben Leber seems to have found a home.

Greg Blue. The new hit man on the team. Put a smack down on the Steeler player at the end of the game. Although Cedric Griffin had a few licks in himself. Both make the team. I have to tell ya, Fred Smoot seems like the weak link. He was burned on the TD pass and also several other times he was out of place. Step it up Fred. Sharper, another pick. Loving that. Played the run quite well last night as well.

Longwell. Nice kickoffs, great FG. He will win a game or two for us this year. Guaranteed. Kluwe had a couple good punts and then a clunker. 22 yards. Only one bad punt, it happens, but we’ll look at next week.

Continuing with special teams, the Vikings pinned the Steelers back pretty well while we had some decent returns. Limited penalties, just a few mistakes, and its only preseason game #2.

Coaching. Bevel and Tomlin has the Offense and Defense on the same page. Both first team units are playing very well. I have to credit coach Childress for the hiring of both coaches.
Bottom line, the team is coming together, faster than I thought and is a pleasant surprise. Another tune up preseason game later this week and hopefully Johnson and Jackson continue to improve and absorb the offense.

SKOL Vikings!
