WTF Was That?
Who would have thought that a week three game at home against the winless Lions would be a must win game for the Vikings? (Everyone put your hands down) Who would have thought that Brett Favre, who only threw 7 interceptions all of last year, would already have 6 after three games? (Put your damn hands down, it’s a rhetorical question) Who would have thought that Hank Baskett-Wilkinson would be lining up for the severely depleted Viking receiver position?
(Hank, don’t buy a permanent home here in Minnesota. Your playboy playmate wife Kendra is sexy as hell, but damn Hank, can’t you do something about that annoying laugh of hers? If that is too much to ask, then how about catching the damn ball and quit holding defenders on run plays. I pray opposing teams don’t attempt an onside kick on your side of the field.)
What are the reasons the Vikings are off to a slow 1-2 start?
Reason #1: Injury to the receivers, mainly Sidney Rice (Out for at least the first six games and maybe more) and Percy Harvin. (Migraines and hip issues)
Reason #2: The loss of Chester Taylor. Taylors production and blocking skills are missed dearly. Peterson and Gerheart have a lot to learn at that skill level.
Reason #3: Yes, it Partly Brett’s fault, for not attending mini camp, training camp, and several pre-season games to get his timing down with receivers, backs, and the offensive line.
Reason #4: The main reason. The offensive line play. Specifically Phil Loadholt. After an average rookie season, he has succumbed to the dreaded sophomore slump. Opposing defenders coined a new nick name for him, “The Doorman,” for every time some one wants in, Phil opens the door.
The left tackle, Mckinnie is not doing much better. hey Bryant, just because you are from the ‘U”, it doesn’t give you a pass to slack. (Perhaps if you pretended the defensive line players were patrons cutting in line outside your favorite club in Miami late at night you would manhandle them better)
I’m serious, pass protection is horrendous. Favre rarely had a chance to set up and survey the field. Instead, he had to look for the quick release read because he cannot step up into the pocket or he is being chased down for a sack.
Some will argue that the bye week came too soon for the Vikings after three games. However, perhaps it will give Farve the much-needed practice time with the receivers to get timing down. Perhaps it will give Harvin more time to heal. And Shaincoe. And Sullivan. And perhaps it will give Childress time to light a fire under Loadholt’s and McKinnie’s ass or trade for a pass protector.
I do believe the Vikings will pull out of their offensive slump but the schedule is not going to be easy.
SKOL VIKINGS!
